HISTORY OF THE PROGRAM
The program is modeled after the National Super Kids Program in the United States, with the purpose of providing special needs children an opportunity to participate in the sport of Soap Box Derby Racing.
Using a dual seat derby car created exclusively for the program, special needs children are paired with experienced SBD racers as co-pilots. Racing as a team they compete with other CSK teams in events specifically hosted for the program or as part of regular soap box derby events. Co-pilots are required to demonstrate their skills driving the two seat car, before being allowed to participate.
In 2009, the Canadian Super Kids Program hosted its first event, as part of the 2009 All American Canadian Local Qualifier. Although the number of participants in the first event was low, the spirit and energy of the racers was huge.
As a result of the event, the Canadian Super Kids Program qualified and sent the first international entry to the National Super Kids Classic in Akron Ohio. This National Super Kids Classic is part of the All American Soap Box Derby Championship Race Week, and features 3 days of events focused squarely on the Super Kid racers, with a banquet and awards ceremony, tours, and of course racing on the track of at Derby Downs.
Currently Peterborough Ontario is the only location for a Super Kids Qualifier, families with special needs children are invited to come to the track in Peterborough, located on the grounds of Kawartha Downs and Speedway to take part in a Super Kids event or just to give their child an opportunity to feel the thrill of the hill in a Super Kids car as they take a test run down the track with a certified CSK driver.
THE GOAL OF THE CANADIAN SUPER KIDS PROGAM
- To provide special need children the opportunity to participate in soap box derby racing.
Ultimately the goal is to grow the program to other communities through out Ontario. Allowing other communities an opportunity to send their own Champions to the National Super Kids Classic.
- This process will take time, and dedication to accomplish but it can be done, with the support of willing sponsors and enthusiastic families.
- To develop a Canadian National Super Kids Championship, where special needs kids from across the Province and eventually Canada, will gather in Peterborough Ontario in a celebration of achievement and competition focused on the special needs racers.
- THE CANADIAN SUPER KIDS CAR
A two seater car, with lift forward body for ease of entry, the car was designed by Bernie Daynes, and is manufactured with the assistance of Bill Turney of Way Cool Kits Peterborough.
- The cost of a Canadian Super Kids car is approx. $800.00, so sponsorship support for a car is a must. The $800.00 cost provides a complete car kit including axles, and easy to follow instructions. All you need is to add a set of wheels and your car is ready to race.
- Car sponsors get to have their name on the cars, and are recognized as integral contributors to the Super Kids Program in your community.
- Event organizers can run a Super Kids race with only two cars to start, as the cars are shared by the participants in the event.
